Get to Know the Brand - White Rabbit Skincare

White Rabbit is a vegan and cruelty free skincare brand which was launched in 2014 by Melanie Blane. After being diagnosed with the skin condition Psoriasis, Melanie quickly learnt that up to 60% of what we put on our skin can be absorbed into our blood stream as well as the fact that so many skin care products were full of irritants and synthetic ingredients. This inspired her to create her own skincare range that was natural and that people could trust. This range has now grown and White Rabbit is well known for its incredible, kind to skin and kind to planet products. I caught up with Melanie to know a little bit more about the person behind this amazing brand.

White Rabbit is based in Dundonald, Ayrshire in the south west coast of Scotland. Everything is done in house, from product manufacture to order dispatch. Melanie’s aim is to become the first plastic-free skincare company in the UK and they are already 94% of the way. How incredible is that?

You talk about the inspiration behind your brand being your skin condition Psoriasis, why was it so important to you to create a natural skincare brand after learning of your skin condition?

I was quite shocked to discover that your skin absorbs a massive 60% of what you put onto it in to your bloodstream, and does so in only 10 seconds. I appreciate there is a place for treatments like steroid creams, but if there isn’t a cure for something like psoriasis, and it’s more about managing the symptoms, I’d rather do so using products and ingredients which aren’t going to impact my overall health long term.

What is your favourite White Rabbit product and why?

I shouldn’t *really* have favourites, but if I HAD to choose, I’d probably say our Eucalyptus and Lavender cleansing balm. It’s one of the first products I created, and it’s such an effective product in removing makeup, cleansing skin without drying and is composed entirely of natural ingredients without need for preservatives etc.

Why is it important to you to create a Vegan & Cruelty free skincare brand?

Firstly I’m vegan myself, and very passionate about sustainability, cruelty free products and eco-friendly practises, therefore to create and promote a brand which wasn’t those things would be a bit (a lot!) contradictory! I honestly believe that Vegan is the way forward, not just in beauty and skincare but as a whole for the benefit of our planet. It also paves the way for awareness and a sense of curiosity, as people start to question what they are using or eating and how It impacts their health. That is one of our 3 company purposes here at White Rabbit Skincare:

  1. Boost confidence
  2. Encourage health awareness
  3. Save the world!

Where did you learn about the benefits of natural ingredients such as essential oils and butters that you use in your products?

Research! I’ve got countless books that I still refer to, and of course Google, where I spent hours reading blogs and articles. I’ve also been on a number of courses which are great at increasing knowledge and helping with product development.

Tell us a personal fact about yourself?

I used to be a voluntary radio presenter at my local hospital, and was the youngest presenter they’d ever had aged 14!

Apart from your amazing skincare range, what is your favourite sustainable product?

I’m a bit obsessed with reusable travel mugs for my coffee. I have at least 4, and my favourite is very old and battered, but I can’t bear to part with it! Not only do they keep your coffee warm and they help the planet, but you often get money off your hot drinks by using them too!

Getting to know the person behind the brand is so important as I believe that the products you buy, especially skincare products are so personal. Many of the brands we work with are small companies that were started by one or two people who had an idea to make this world a better place by offering a sustainable alternative. White Rabbit products are proudly registered with the below organisations which aim to protect animals:

  • The Vegan Society
  • Cruelty Free International
  • PETA
  • Orangutan Alliance Palm Oil Free
  • Naturewatch

Thank you Melanie for taking the time out of your super busy schedule to answer these questions for us.
